Splendeurs Minérales du Sinaï - Coloured Canyon, White Canyon, Ein Khudra

MINERAL SPLENDORS OF SINAI – COLOURED CANYON, WHITE CANYON, EIN KHUDRA

Je rêvais depuis longtemps de passer une nuit à la belle étoile sur le Djebel Moussa, (Mont Moïse) au Sinaï. Le Djebel Moussa, également appelé Mont Sinaï, est la montagne du haut de laquelle Moïse aurait, d'après la Bible, reçu les Dix Commandements.

L’accomplissement de ce rêve aura été pour moi l’occasion de découvrir une des terres les plus hostiles et stérile de la planète, et des paysages de montagnes désertiques et acérées parmi les plus extraordinaires avec ceux du Yémen.

L’ascension du Mont Moïse (2 285m) offre à lui seul un panorama sans pareil des montagnes désertiques du Sinaï, et notamment une vue imprenable sur le mont Sainte-Catherine (2 642m), qui est également le sommet le plus haut d'Égypte.

Mais pour découvrir toutes les subtilités « minérales » du Sinaï, rien n’égale une plongée dans les entrailles même de cette terre au relief torturé, lors d’une excursion à Coloured Canyon et White Canyon.

Coloured Canyon et White Canyon s’étendent à l’intérieur des terres du Sinaï, au nord de Dahab, entre Sainte Catherine et Nuweiba. L’endroit est difficilement accessible sans moyen de locomotion. On arrive par la piste à une centaine de mètres de Coloured Canyon, qui lui-même se situe à 5km de la "grand route", le tout bien sûr en plein cagnard !

Heureusement ou malheureusement, de trop nombreuses agences de voyages à Dahab et Nuweiba vous proposeront des excursions en groupe pour découvrir ces deux Canyons, de 3 jours à dos de chameau ou d’une journée en jeep, avec à la clé un déjeuner dans la pittoresque Oasis « Ein Khudra ». 

Il vous restera cependant par le bouche à oreille, à bien choisir sur place la « bonne Agence du moment ».

La route entre DAHAB et Coloured Canyon longe le Golfe d’Aquaba vers le Nord, avant de s’enfoncer au cœur du Sinaï au creux de montagnes acérées à la beauté imposante. Le trajet est l’occasion sur la côte, de faire un détour par le Blue Hole, l’un des 5 plus beaux spots de plongée au Monde, aussi réputé que dangereux, et dans lequel je ferais mon baptême de plongée.

Parti des hauteurs de Coloured Canyon, il faut une vingtaine de minutes pour "pénétrer" dans les entrailles de la terre. Vous entrez alors dans un labyrinthe rocheux, aux passages étroits, dont les parois peuvent atteindre plusieurs dizaines de mètres de haut. Un univers minéral à l’abri du vent où règne un silence de cathédrale, et où la végétation très limitée, est réduite à sa plus simple expression.

Coloured Canyon est en fait une gorge creusée par l’eau, aux formes et aux couleurs surnaturelles, qui en font une des formations géologiques les plus spectaculaires du monde. Le Canyon doit en effet son nom aux fantastiques strates rocheuses de couleurs vives et variées courant le long de ses parois, dans un patchwork pailleté de jaune, de bleu, de rose, et de vert.

Bien que plus petit et moins spectaculaire que le Coloured Canyon, White Canyon mérite également le détour. La descente au creux du Canyon se fait par une échelle de cordes et de câbles métalliques plutôt « rock and roll ». Les paysages de montagnes de grès et de calcaire de White Canyon sont éblouissants tant au sens propre qu’au figuré. La lumière réfléchie par les roches calcaires de White Canyon est en effet particulièrement intense, et il est déconseillé de faire la ballade sans lunettes de soleil. Attention également aux coups de soleil et risques d’insolation…

La randonnée au creux des gorges de Coloured Canyon et de White Canyon est assez aisée, mais reste suffisamment aventureuse par endroits pour laisser un souvenir impérissable. Vous aurez à passer quelques obstacles. Et il vous faudra tantôt randonner ou glisser le long des parois à plusieurs mètres du sol, escalader ou vous faufiler en dessous d’immense rochers en travers des gorges, voire même sauter d’un bord à l’autre des Canyons au dessus de plusieurs mètres de vide...

La balade dans White Canyon se termine à l'oasis de « Ein Khudra », nichée entre des falaises de grès jaunâtres, non loin de la route reliant Nuweiba à Sainte Catherine. « Ein Khudra », « Oasis Verte » en arabe est l'une des oasis les plus belles et pittoresques du Sinaï.

Historiquement, la palmeraie et les jardins de dattiers de « Ein Khudra » ont été de tout temps une escale importante dans le désert du Sinaï, et en particulier pour les pèlerins qui se rendaient de Jérusalem à Sainte-Catherine. 

Tout comme les pèlerins de l’époque, vous pourrez et devrez prendre le temps de vous reposer au milieu des sources d'eau fraîche et jaillissantes de « Ein Khudra ». De vous délecter de merveilleux barbecues cuits dans des feuilles de palmiers et d’un traditionnel verre de thé, avant de reprendre votre chemin vers Sainte Catherine. Mais ça, c’est une autre histoire…

I had dreamed for a long time of spending a night under the stars on Jebel Moussa, (Mount Moses) in Sinai. Jebel Moussa, also called Mount Sinai, is the mountain from which Moses, according to the Bible, received the Ten Commandments.

The fulfillment of this dream was for me the opportunity to discover one of the most hostile and sterile lands on the planet, and landscapes of desert and sharp mountains among the most extraordinary with those of Yemen.

The ascent of Mount Moses (2,285m) alone offers an unparalleled panorama of the desert mountains of Sinai, including a breathtaking view of Mount Sainte-Catherine (2,642m), which is also the highest peak in Egypt.

But to discover all the “mineral” subtleties of Sinai, nothing beats a dive into the very bowels of this land with its tortured relief, during an excursion to Coloured Canyon and White Canyon.

Coloured Canyon and White Canyon extend inland from Sinai, north of Dahab, between Saint Catherine and Nuweiba. The place is difficult to access without means of transport. We arrive by the track about a hundred meters from Coloured Canyon, which itself is located 5km from the "main road", all of course in full hot sun !

Fortunately or unfortunately, too many travel agencies in Dahab and Nuweiba will offer you group excursions to discover these two Canyons, 3 days on the back of a camel or a day in a jeep, including a lunch in the picturesque Oasis “Ein Khudra”.

However, through word of mouth, you will have to choose the “right Agency of the moment” on site.

The road between DAHAB and Colored Canyon runs along the Gulf of Aquaba to the north, before plunging into the heart of Sinai in the hollow of sharp mountains of imposing beauty. The journey is an opportunity on the coast to take a detour to the Blue Hole, one of the 5 most beautiful diving spots in the world, as famous as it is dangerous, and where I will do my first dive.

Starting from the heights of Coloured Canyon, it takes around twenty minutes to “penetrate” into the bowels of the earth. You then enter a rocky labyrinth, with narrow passages, whose walls can reach several tens of meters high. A mineral universe sheltered from the wind where a cathedral silence reigns, and where the very limited vegetation is reduced to its simplest expression.

Coloured Canyon is in fact a gorge dug by water, with supernatural shapes and colors, which make it one of the most spectacular geological formations in the world. The Canyon owes its name to the fantastic rock strata of bright and varied colors running along its walls, in a glittery patchwork of yellow, blue, pink, and green.

Although smaller and less spectacular than Coloured Canyon, White Canyon is also worth a detour. The descent into the hollow of the Canyon is via a rather “rock and roll” ladder of ropes and metal cables. The sandstone and limestone mountain landscapes of White Canyon are dazzling both literally and figuratively. The light reflected by the limestone rocks of White Canyon is in fact particularly intense, and it is not recommended to do the walk without sunglasses. Also be careful of sunburn and risk of sunstroke…

The hike through the Coloured Canyon and White Canyon gorges is fairly easy, but remains adventurous enough in places to leave a lasting memory. You will have to pass some obstacles. And you will sometimes have to hike or slide along the walls several meters above the ground, climb or sneak under immense rocks across the gorges, or even jump from one edge to the other of the Canyons above several meters of vacuum...

The walk in White Canyon ends at the oasis of “Ein Khudra”, nestled between yellowish sandstone cliffs, not far from the road linking Nuweiba to Saint Catherine. “Ein Khudra”, “Green Oasis” in Arabic, is one of the most beautiful and picturesque oases in Sinai.

Historically, the palm grove and date gardens of “Ein Khudra” have always been an important stopover in the Sinai desert, and in particular for pilgrims traveling from Jerusalem to Sainte-Catherine.

Just like the pilgrims of the time, you can and should take the time to rest in the middle of the fresh, gushing water sources of “Ein Khudra”. To enjoy wonderful barbecues cooked in palm leaves and a traditional glass of tea, before resuming your journey towards Sainte Catherine. But that's another story…
